STEP 1 - COLLECTION AND TRANSPORT

source Under the supervision of our pathologists, our laboratory scientific staff record a description of your specimen (dimensions, colour, identifying features, etc).

STEP 2 - MACROSCOPIC DESCRIPTION

cutup

Depending on the type and size of the specimen, it is cut into pieces and placed into plastic cassettes. The number of cassettes used depends on the size of the specimen and the number of pieces.

STEP 3 - CUT-UP

The cassettes are placed into a tissue processor which cycles the specimens through various reagents. By the end of this process all water that was in the tissue cells has been replaced with paraffin wax. This process takes several hours.

STEP 4 - PROCESSING

At the end of the processing, the tissue pieces are removed from the cassette and oriented into a block of wax.

STEP 5 - EMBEDDING

The block is placed into a microtome which laboratory scientific staff use to cut thin sections of tissue (4 microns).

STEP 6 - MICROTOMY

slidedip

Sections of wax ribbon containing tissue are floated on a warm bath of water, which allows the skin sections to be picked up onto a pre-labelled glass slide. Sections are taken at standard intervals within the specimen, or as directed by the pathologist.

STEP 7 - PLACING SECTIONS ON SLIDE

slideSTEP9

Most sections of tissue are given a basic haematoxylin and eosin stain. The glass slides pass through a series of reagents to create this stain which selectively stains various elements of the cells.

STEP 8 - STAINING

slideSTEP9real

When staining is complete, the stained tissue is permanently covered with a glass cover slip which keeps the tissue in place and preserves it.

STEP 9 - COVER SLIPPING

When staining has been completed, all slides for a particular patient are labelled, collated and placed on trays. The tissue on each slide is then matched to the tissue on the corresponding wax block from which it was cut. Cases are then issued to the reporting pathologist for examination.

STEP 10 - CASES ISSUED TO PATHOLOGIST

The slides are now examined under the microscope by a pathologist. If necessary, a pathologist may order special stains to gather further information. Immunohistochemical or immunoflurescent staining is required in certain cases, and generates a medicare-rebatable fee.

STEP 11 - REPORTING BY PATHOLOGIST

slides_edited-9

When completed, a report is delivered back to your referring doctor via secure electronic messaging, by fax, post, and/or hand delivery. In some cases, the pathologist will also consult directly with your doctor. The report is used by your doctor to determine future treatment.
